Gargnano Post code 25084, Altitude: 100 m, Population: 3.300. Province: Brescia. Region: Lombardy. Monte Denervo (1495 m) in the back, Mount Baldo (2.218 m) on the opposite side of the lake. The picturesque village of Gargnano is the capital of 12 more villages. Some are situated on the lake (Gargnano, Villa and Bogliaco), others in slope (Villavetro, Fornico, Zuino, Navazzo, Musaga, Muslone) and others in the hinterland (Sasso, Liano, Formaga, Costa). The landscape along the Gardesana is shaped by olive groves, orange and lemon gardens. Valvestino is the innermost, wild area of the Limone Riviera winding along a narrow artificial lake formed by a dam that collects the water of the Toscolano River. Since the 18th century until the beginning of the 20th the Limoneia was an important source of income beside fishing. Today, many people live from tourism, nevertheless, Gargnano has still its magic. The house of artists and architects Fleischmann & Strauss is a place to live and work in the midst of a vibrant Italian community. Der pittoreske Ort besteht neben dem Hauptort aus 12 weiteren Ortschaften. Die Landschaft entlang der Gardesana ist von Olivenhainen, Orangengärten und Zitronengewächshäusern geprägt. Das Valvestino, der unberührteste Abschnitt der Zitronenriviera, ist ein herrliches Tal im Umkreis eines Stausees, der vom Fluß Toscolano bewässert wird. Seit dem 18. Jh. bis Anfang des 20. Jhd. war die Limoneia eine wichtige Einkommensquelle neben dem Fischfang. Heute leben viele Menschen vom Tourismus, dennoch hat Gargnano seinen Zauber bewahrt. Das Haus der Künstler und Architekten Fleischmann & Strauss ist ein Ort zum Leben und Arbeiten inmitten einer lebendigen italienischen Gemeinde. HISTORY

Gargnano, the most beautiful city at Lake Garda (green tourism), located on the paradisiacal western shores, has preserved its charm: palaces, mansions, churches and lemon gardens were built by wealthy residents. Bars, cafes and restaurants characterize the historic old town around the small harbor. The turbulent past is evident in the facades of the old Palazzi near the port where cannonballs stuck. In 1866, during the "Risorgimento" that finally led to the national unification of Italy, Austrian warships shelled the city. Goethe loved the place. D.H. Lawrence was inspired for his novel "Lady Chatterly's lover" 1918 in Gargnano, finished his novel "Sons and Lovers" and worked on a book of poetry, including "Sunday Afternoon in Italy". During the so-called "Republic of Salò" (1943-45) the government and the family Benito Mussolini stayed in two of the Feltrinelli Villas' in Gargnano. The Palazzo Feltrinelli served as the State Chancellery, the Villa Feltrinelli in a park at the lake as a residence for the family. The paper magnate Feltrinelli - father of the left publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli - had built a summer residence in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th Century. Today the Villa Feltrinelli is a 5 star hotel in a 3.2 acre park with helicopter landing site - and not to visit. GESCHICHTE

Gargnano, die schönste Stadt am Gardasee (sanfter Tourismus), am paradiesischen Westufer gelegen, hat ihren Charme bewahrt: Paläste, Villen, Kirchen und Zitronengärten wurden von wohlhabenden Einwohnern errichtet. Bars, Trattorien und Restaurants  charakterisieren die historische Altstadt um den kleinen Hafen herum. Eine bewegte Vergangenheit sieht man an den Fassaden der alten Palazzi um das Hafenbecken in denen Kanonenkugeln stecken. 1866 beschossen österreichische Kriegsschiffe den Ort während der Risorgimento-Aufstände, die schließlich zur nationalstaatlichen Einigung Italiens führten. Goethe liebte diesen Ort. D.H. Lawrence holte sich 1918 hier Inspiration für seinen Roman "Lady Chatterly's Liebhaber", beendete seine Novelle "Sons and Lovers" und arbeitete an einem Gedichtband, inclusive "Sunday Afternoon in Italy". Währen der sogenannten Republik von Salò (1943-45) hielten sich die Regierung und die Familie Benito Mussolini in zwei der Feltrinelli-Villen in Gargnano auf. Der Palazzo Feltrinelli diente als Staatskanzlei, die Villa Feltrinelli in einem Park am See als Wohnsitz der Familie. The old townhall is a classic, elegant 16th century building in the style of Todeschini (1524 - 1603), it dominates the square and port. A memorial tablet beneath the portico commemorates the bombardment of 1866. The church of San Francesco at the entrance of Gargnano, a few hundred meters south of the harbor, dates from the 17th Century. But the attached cloister is part of a monastery from the 13th Century, founded by Francis of Assisi. In the rear part of the cloister one sees a portal made of gray stone, on the crossbeam are scenes from the life of Jesus represented, along with the proclamation of Mary. In the dark interior of the church one can notice the three large oil paintings above the main entrance. Worth a visit is also the powerful parish church of San Martino in the style of Italian historicism (19th century). It lies directly on the Gardesana. After the large porch one enters the highly unusual interior, with has the shape of an powerful ellipse. A English-language leaflet describes the art of altars with their paintings. Even the nearby cemetery is worth seeing. At the Church of San Martino (traffic lights) cross the Gardesana, then right hand uphill. Walking through the streets of the Old Town, to Villa or in the mountains show charming corners and offer a magnificent view of the lake. The whitewashed chapel of San Valentino lies above Sasso, 770 meters above sea level in the middle of the forest. Here fled the population 1630, in the hope to escape the prevailing plague at the lake. Palazzo Bettoni lies with the magnificent Baroque garden in Bogliaco directly at the Gardesana. It originates from the 18th Century and is inhabited until today by the princely family Bettoni.

Das ehemalige Gemeindehaus wurde im 16. Jh. in elegantem klassischem Stil errichtet. Seine architektonischen Linien verweisen auf Todeschini (1524-1603) und beherrschen den Platz und den Hafen. Ein unter dem Bogengang gelegener Gedenkstein erinnert an die Bombardierung von 1866. Die Kirche San Francesco steht am Eingang von Gargnano einige hundert Meter südlich vom Hafenbecken. Sie stammt aus dem 17. Jh., doch der angeschlossene Kreuzgang ist Teil eines Klosters aus dem 13. Jh., gegründet von Franz von Assisi. Im hinteren Teil des Kreuzgangs sieht man ein Portal aus grauem Stein, auf dem Querbalken sind Szenen aus dem Leben Jesu dargestellt, daneben die Verkündigung Marias. Im düsteren Innenraum der Kirche fallen die drei großen Ölgemälde über dem Haupteingang auf. Einen Besuch wert ist auch die mächtige Pfarrkirche San Martino im Stil des italienischen Historismus (19. Jh.). Sie liegt direkt an der Gardesana. Nach der großen Vorhalle betritt man den höchst ungewöhnlichen Innenraum, der die Form einer mächtigen Ellipse hat. Ein deutschsprachiges Merkblatt beschreibt die kunstreichen Altäre mit ihren Gemälden. Auch der Friedhof in der Nähe ist sehenswert. An der Kirche San Martino (Ampel) überquert man die Gardesana, dann rechter Hand bergauf. Spaziergänge durch die Gassen der Altstadt, nach Villa oder in die Berge zeigen reizvolle Ecken und bieten eine wunderschöne Sicht auf den See. Die weißgekalkte Kapelle San Valentino liegt oberhalb von Sasso auf 770 Metern Höhe mitten im Wald. Hierhin flüchtete die Bevölkerung 1630, in der Hoffnung der am See herrschenden Pest zu entkommen. Der Palazzo Bettoni steht mit dem prächtigen Barockgarten in Bogliaco direkt an der Gardesana. Er stammt aus dem 18. Jhd. und wird bis heute von der fürstlichen Familie Bettoni bewohnt.
